Dear USTC Alumni:
I would like to bring to your attention some opinion on the Keda
Alumni Scholarship recently poposed in USTC Bulletin Board (telnet to
cauchy.math.udel.edu with login name ustc). Enclosed please find
a collection of posts on this issue.
Personally I like this idea, and am willing to coordinate the fund
raising activity among USTC alumni in Chicago area. Some suggestions:
(1) We should take this opportunity to set up USTC Alumni Association
in North America. One thing we could do is conducting yearly campaign
to raise fund for Keda Alumni Scholarship.
(2) We should select one of well-established USTC alumni to manage the
account -- I propose Professor Zhang Shang-you (771) at the University
of Delaware.
Let's give it more discussion on this net.
Best regards,
Dongzi Liu (854)

#248 Apr-19: Keda Alumni Scholarship (From Unknown)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, folks, after I came back from China last year, I have been
thinking the possibility of establishing a Keda Alumni scholarship.
However, as I am in my fifth year and very busy to finsih soon. I
thought it might be better first to ask your opinion on this.
I have been thinking that due to the location of Hefei, the concentration
of majors in sciences, and the gradual independence from Academica
Sinica, bright youths may not like to go to Keda as we did before.
>From my point of view, Keda is good because of its good students. If
not-so-bright students are the only choice for Keda, then Keda is dead.
We certainly don't like this situation, for most of us at least.
However, I feel there is way to do that. We have more than 2000 people
abroad (am I right?) If each person donate $10, that is $20000. That
is enough to sponsor at least 100 students (tuition about 1000Y last
year). Of cource, if we can always ask the school to match us (and
the Anhui government). But those details can be done later
How do you like this, guys! If you support this, voice your view here.
Since I'm too busy to do a lot this year, I better not say my name here.
I hope somebody who has some free time do this, together, we can make
Keda better (In the future, when we got money, we will add medical
scholl, law scholl, b school to our Alma mater, we can).
best wishes to you all.

I think it is a very great idea. It is a tremendous advantage for
Ke Da to have such a big number former students in the states. We
can be of a great help to our Almar Mater. It is really a good time
for us to do something for our Ke Da.

#265 May-1: Endorsing the idea of a USTC Aalumni Scholarship (From Unknown)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the idea of establishing a Alumni Scholarship is a great idea.
I here.aappeal to you fellow USTcers to act if you like this idea. I
myself will try to contact USTC fleeows.(follows) in my own area and
talk to them about this.(about this). Every volunteer is encouraged
to contribute >10 dollars to this foundation. The more you contribute,
the better. Doing one thing is much better than saying ten things.
Mmost of us lobe(love) Keda, right? Let's act now and do something.
I'm certainly willing to donate more than 10 dollars. Folks, let's
join our hands and make our Aalmer Mater a more prestigious school.
Love Keda, Long Live Keda.

#267 May-2: No dough yet, not now (From Unknown)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
We should not give our money away to Keda for nothing.
What we need to do is to form a USTC Alumni Association
North America Branch (USTC-AANA) first (forgive my
ignorance if it is in existance already), and, more
importantly, USTC-AANA should seek to play an important
role in couseling Keda's administration of academic
programs. This influence of us comes from, of course,
the financial support from USTC-AANA to our alma mater.
A lot of us feel that Keda is not heading toward the
right direction; and if we are to support its development,
we ought to have a bigger say in some of the important
affairs.

#270 May-3: Good sign. (From Jun)

It seems that a olt of ustcers are still missing that school and really
want to do something for it. I think the way to do it maybe is to find
some sctive persons who have good fames and credits to clolect money
or to set a special account for ustc here, but I reaaly don't know how
nmany poeple who have interests to do this work, I hope those persons
who really want to do something or to organize this thing can stand out
and do something. My email address is jw171@columbia.edu.
