USTC is Out of Top 5

As the letter from USTC president implied, one of the major issues with USTC is
to get top faculty members. A university could not be good in research and
education ranking without good faculty members. Let's ask us why we have not
gone back teaching for USTC. While we can not easily change this decision of
us, we probably can at least starting to do something to change the reasons of
this decision. After reducing the reasons of not working for USTC, we should
see more and more top people working for USTC.

During my visit to USTC last month, I could see that the university treated
young people very well. However, USTC probably does not make as much income
as some companies in Hefei or some other universities in China to pay people
too well or to provide too good facilities. Can we do anything to change that?
We probably can do more than what we thought.

A USTC alumnus helped the dept. 11 of USTC getting a software development
contract from a foreign company, and this project has been quite successful.
Do many of us have possibilities to make any kinds relationships between
companies and USTC? I do not have much power in IBM but I tried to inform
people at IBM China about how valuable USTC is. Probably we can give some
suggestions to USTC about how to make such relationships easier to build.
I do not have much expertise at this, but I got USTC vice president YIN Hongjun
to send somebody to get in touch with IBM China starting with some basic
introductory information about USTC.

When you visit USTC, you will find many little things that you can do there.
ShaoNianBan got grants from a computer company in Hefei. One of the things
they do to make this relationship mutually beneficial is to arrange information
exchange between people from the company and ShaoNianBan alumni in U.S. when
they visit USTC.

There are also possibilities for people working in academia. You may have some
interesting seminars to give, or you might be able to get some conferences to
select USTC as their next sites. Because of Huangshan, USTC is not a bad place
to attract conferences and these conferences may get USTC to be more famous.

Quite possibly you can also get benefits immediately from things like these.
If you visit China, your detour to USTC probably can allow you to deduct the
trip expense when you do income tax return because your trip is for a business
purpose now.

Keep in touch with whoever you know in USTC and you probably can find a lot of
things you can do for USTC (you may get immediate benefits from some of them).
For example, XUAN Changneng wrote to USTC president and got the expectation of
contribution to attracting people to work for USTC and to a coming foundation
(similar to the Alumni Foundation) as well as going back to USTC to work or
to visit. If it is from a lower level person, you may see things more short-
term or smaller-scale oriented, and therefore more creative and more personally
beneficial.
