Campaign Letter for
USTC Alumni Foundation
**************************

Dear USTC Alumnus/Alumna
and People who care about the future of USTC:

*** We are from USTC ***

Imagine the following conversation between two USTC graduates:

A: I am from 854.
B: I am from 843. Hey, do you know C from 852 ?
A: Sure, I also have a buddy named D in 843.
.......
Only people from USTC understand what they are talking about. We have
this unique system, that we can identify each other instantly without
saying a word -- and we say these numbers with pride and honor, because
we are from the one and THE only ONE University of Science and
Technology of China.

Dear alumnus/alumna, have you ever recall the good old days back in
USTC ? When we were all gifted and young, we came to USTC not for its
superb conditions comparing to other top universities, but for the best
scientific training available in China. The best part of USTC is its people
-- both students and faculties, we are young and energetic, full of fresh
ideas, extremely hardworking -- because we already determined to devote
ourselves to scientific research and knowledge, to seek out the truth in
the world.

*** However, USTC is declining !!!***

However, the good old days are really becoming good OLD days, our Alma
Mater is going downhill due to various reasons -- current economic
situation in China, unfavorable geographic location, political suppression
etc., etc. We are losing excellent faculties and unable to attract
outstanding high school graduates. If the trend is continuing, it will not
be surprising to see USTC dropping out of the list of top Chinese
universities in a decade because we are losing the foundation (its
human resources) to stand on top and move ahead.

*** What to do ???***

Dear alumnus/alumna and people who care about the future of USTC,
we appeal to you that we all get united and do something to help our
Alma Mater. We are setting up the USTC Alumni Foundation, so please
join us. If each of us could contribute $15, $20 or more, we can do
a lot to help USTC.

This foundation is independent of USTC Administration, it will be
managed by a committee elected by all people who have made or will make
contribution to this foundation. The sole purpose of this USTC
Alumni Foundation is to coordinate the efforts by USTC alumni to help
our Alma Mater to stay on top and move ahead.

The first thing the USTC Alumni Foundation will do is to offer
scholarship to outstanding high school graduates who are willing to study
in USTC. This scholarship will cover their tuition and needed living
expenses. If we can attract 100 top high school graduates to USTC each
year, we are on our way to bring the glory and honor back to USTC.

If you are willing to join this foundation, please send your contribution
to:

USTC Alumni Foundation

Please make the check payable to "USTC Alumni Foundation", and make sure
leave your name in Chinese (only if applicable), grade and class (also
only if applicable), and phone number and email address if possible. You
will get an acknowledgment and we will inform you the progress of this
foundation.

Please forward this campaign letter to other USTC alumni and people who
care about the future of USTC you know via e-mail and/or call them
(especially those at your local area) to let them know this campaign in
case they don't, please also encourage them to join us in this endeavor
to help our dear Alma Mater.

Dear alumni, let us get united and do something real and great for USTC!
Let's do it today! Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Ad Hoc Committee for Overseas USTC Alumni Foundation
