The Rover was written by Aphra Behn, the first professional female writer in England, and first performed in 1677.  This Restoration Comedy follows three English cavaliers and their amorous encounters with Spanish Nobles and local Sicilians during Carnavale in Naples. Corporal Willmore is The Rover: a sailor who falls hard for Senorita Hellena. She is keen to experience love before she enters the convent. The Rover also works his charms on the famous courtesan Angelica Bianca, who doesn't take kindly to sharing him. Hellena's sister Florinda loves handsome Colonel Belvile. She doesn't want to marry the elderly man her father has chosen or her brother's choice, and friend, the pompous Don Antonio. Meanwhile, spoiled master Blunt finds out the hard way that his true love, Lucetta, is a prostitute and a thief.

Directed by TACIT director Brian Brophy, the play is resituated during Mardi Gras in New Orleans 1870s with plenty of danger, excitement and romance! For more information contact Mr. Brophy at brophy@caltech.edu
