The Caltech Dojo practice schedule is as follows:
Monday and Wednesday: 7:00 - 9:00 PM Southeast corner of Brown Gym
Saturday: 10:00 - 12:00 noon Multipurpose Room
In addition to the above listed standard classes, each week we also usually have "members only" 50 Kata practices as follows:
For a few weeks before Special Trainings, we sometimes schedule these 50 Kata practices more frequently. The practice schedule is published to the email list each week.
In the past there has been a "Beginning" class and an "Advanced" class taught in conjunction with the Caltech PE44 class. Due to recent changes in the Caltech Athletics Department, these classes have been terminated indefinitely. The following is for historical interest only (and so we don't have to type it in again if the old class structure is restored).
The Beginning class focuses on basics, introductory kata, introductory kumite. Per instructor discretion, the class will also be periodically partitioned by kyu in order that the multiple belt levels in the class/club can progress according to their baseline preparedness.
The Advanced class on Monday/Wednesday focuses on advanced kumite techniques, primarily guided by the SKA instruction calendar. Some advanced kata repetitions may also be performed, but advanced kata instruction will be primarily on Saturdays (see below).
The Advanced class on Saturday focuses on advanced kata instruction and advanced kumite techniques, primarily guided by the SKA instruction calendar.
The general guideline for participating in the Advanced class is that one must have completed PE44 section 1 (beginner section) or participated in an SKA grading. If one has not completed the beginner's section or participated in an SKA grading, but has participated in a Special Training or has participated in a different Shotokan group it is necessary to consult with the instructor.
