Kyu Test

If you're like me, when I had to do my first Kyu Test I didn't know what to expect. Here's info from the text "Notes on Training" by Tsutomu Ohshima, modified with some info relevant to the Caltech Karate Club

Kihon

Basics are done in this order: Down Block (Gedan Barai), Up Block (Ageuke), Inside Forearm Block (Udeuke), Hammer Block (Tetsui Uke), Knife Hand Block (Shoto-uke), Front Punch (Oizuki), Reverse Punch (Gyakuzuki), Front Kick (Maegeri), Roundhouse Kick (Mawashigeri), Side Up Kick (Yokogeri Keage), Side Thrust Kick (Yokogeri Kekomi), Crescent Kick (Mikazukigeri), Stomp Kick (Fumikomi). In the Caltech Karate Club, for the first kyu test, you generally don't have to do crescent kick and stomp kick.

Kata

Favorite kata: Generally one of the Heian katas... if you just started in the club, generally Heian Shodan.

Group kata: Selected by the review board, generally one of the Heian kata... if this is your first kyu test, then you won't be asked for the group kata.

Kumite

Sanbon Kumite: Chudan level, Jodan level.

Ippon Kumite: Chudan level, Jodan level. Generally first time testers will not have to do Ippon kumite.
