Experience

Caltech, Director, Information Services, Development & Alumni Relations, 1997 - Present.

Responsibilities include technical leadership in and oversight of the use of computers and databases in Development & Alumni Relations (DAR), management of the Information Services budget, and oversight of the staff in the Technical Services group.

Lead the conversion of DAR database from FRIS to Millennium: On time and under budget.
Reorganized staff to better serve DAR as well as improve data integrity and quality.
Directed the upgrade of all desktops in DAR to a unified environment. Rollout plan included training for each group while their workstation was replaced. Current environment includes regular workstation replacement, software maintenance, training and support as needed.
Designed workstation, server and logical network infrastructure for DAR.
Directed the installation of toll-free computer access: Greatly reduce costs for traveling staff.
Oracle DBA: Install and maintain DAR database software, import / export data, etc.
Chief report writer: Design and write reports in Crystal Reports, proof reports done by staff.
Encourage and mentor staff to enhance their skills and abilities.

PITZER COLLEGE, Director of Academic Computing, 1993 - 1997

Responsibilities included oversight of the Academic Computing budget, technical leadership in the use of computers in the academic program, and management of staff who perform the day-to-day technical administration of the computing environment.

Implemented new LAN: Extended LAN to all administrative and academic buildings, as well as to the first of three dorms. Off-campus access via new PPP dial-up server.
Reorganization of Pitzer Computing: Much better service with no additional staff required.
Directed the installation of first Campus-Wide web server.
Directed remodeling of computer labs to allow for both classroom and general use.
Directed the upgrade of all administrative desktops to a unified environment.
Encourage and mentor staff to enhance their skills and abilities.

HARVEY MUDD COLLEGE, VMS Systems Manager, Academic Computing, 1987 - 1993

Responsibilities included system administration, capacity planning, technical support, programming, supervision of student assistants, software maintenance and installation. Occasional duties included hardware and software contract administration, making detailed recommendations for upgrades and network administration.

HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO., Member of the Computing Staff II, 1984 - 1987

VAX/VMS System Manager. Primary system manager for a VAX 11/785 running Oracle database applications under VMS 4.5. Backup system manager for five other VMS systems. Responsibilities included system administration, technical support, programming, user consulting, software maintenance and installation.
