About the Ombuds Office
The Ombuds Office is a
safe place
to discuss your concerns.
If you are unsure about how an Institute policy or procedure applies to your situation
If you feel that you have been unfairly treated by anyone on campus
If you have a problem that requires someone to help negotiate a solution, or help facilitate communication between yourself and others
If you have a dilemma and don't know where to turn
If you feel that any Institute policy, procedure, or regulation has been applied unfairly or erroneously, or is itself fundamentally unfair
If you think you have experienced harrassment or discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or other basis
The Caltech Ombudsperson will
Listen to you
Be available to discuss unusual or sensitive problems
Provide answers to your questions or assist you in finding someone who can
Help analyze your situation and identify and evaluate options for responding to it
Counsel and provide assistance to members of the Caltech community in cases of injustice, discriminiation or harassment of any kind
Facilitate discussions and mediate between individuals or groups in a dispute or problem situation
Investigate a complaint, including interviewing involved parties and reviewing Institute records and documents
Assist with problems that have not been resolved by other offices
Provide you with referrals to other Caltech or community resources or programs
Be responsive to campus health, safety, and ethical concerns
Identify problem areas faced by students, staff, and faculty and recommend changes in policies or procedures when necessary
Bring a complaint to the attention of the appropriate Institute officials if needed
Promote fair and equitable treatment for all members of the Caltech community
