Organization and Operation The GSC is the student government for Caltech graduate students, comprised of representatives from options and the graduate student body at-large. The GSC directors meet monthly to discuss graduate student concerns. In order to address the many concerns of graduate students, the GSC is divided into many specialized subcommittees which any student can join. We also have representatives on many of the institute faculty committees. We accomplish our goals through interaction with the institute's administrative bodies to promote the interests of the student body. The GSC also sponsors (along with student groups and other social organizations) many social, cultural, and athletic events throughout the year to help maintain the mental stability of graduate students. We are run as a corporation, and operate through a set of bylaws. Choosing Representatives GSC representatives are chosen by YOU and can be any graduate student. There are two kinds or representatives, Option Representatives (representing options) and Directors at Large (representing the general graduate student body). Any graduate student wishing to join the GSC may do so by filling the nomination form. You do not need to be a member of the GSC to participate in GSC events or attend subcommittee meetings (excluding Budget Committee). Members (directors) of the GSC are required to attend monthly director meetings, actively participate on at least one subcommittee, and attend the annual GSC BoD retreat. The GSC has adopted the following guidelines for selecting student representatives on Faculty Committees. This document is an excerpt from the faculty by-laws, describing the various faculty committees, and their purposes. This document is another excerpt from the faculty by-laws describing the process for student representation on faculty committees. Governing Documents The GSC believes that it is the responsibility of a governing body to make sure its bylaws, policies, and practices are transparent to its constituency. With that in mind, documents concerning our bylaws, policies, and practices are found below.
