The California Institute of Technology operates a 10.4m Leighton
telescope (Caltech Submillimeter Observatory, CSO) at 4,200m on Mauna Kea,
Hawaii. The telescope operates in the 200-900 GHz (1.5-0.32mm) range and
both heterodyne spectroscopy and bolometer studies can be carried out. The
observatory utilizes SIS receivers and low temperature bolometer arrays. A
postdoctoral scholar position is available at Caltech in Pasadena, to work
in the CSO group, either in observations or on detector development, or
preferably both. Appointment is contingent upon completion of Ph.D.
requirements. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable to a

An electronics technician is sought to support the development of instrumentation for airborne astronomy. The successful candidate will work on a wide variety of challenging projects, including the construction of analog, digital, and microwave electronics, as well as cryogenic, optical, and mechanical assemblies. Candidates should have either a degree or a diploma in electrical engineering or physics, or at least 4 years of equivalent experience. The ability to construct electronic equipment without supervision is required. Experience in radio or microwave techniques, cryogenics, optics, or vacuum systems is desirable.
