Statement of purpose:

The Caltech Electric Vehicle Club exists to educate the Caltech community about electric vehicles through first hand experience.

Background:

CEVC is a small but growing group of Techers with an interest in electric vehicles. We organized ourselves as a student club with ASCIT and GSC recognition. This was necessary to formalize the entity taking care of "the Caltech electric car". And it enables us to pursue funding for the expenses incurred in doing so.

There are roughly a dozen active members involved with mechanical work on the car and organizational efforts for the club. We also maintain a much larger list of e-mail addresses of people at Caltech interested in electric vehicles. E-mail to this list should be kept to a minimum. Let us know if you want to receive e-mail about CEVC activities or if you want to become actively involved with the club.

History

Here's a summary of our 1996-'97 activities

The Caltech Electric Vehicle Club was in its infancy this year, and as a result suceeded in sucking the valuable life force from only a small core group of its members. Pursuing the club's goal of making electric vehicle driving a common experience for members of the Caltech community, the club started with a converted Toyota Paseo donated by the estate of Disney CEO Frank Wells. Efforts throughout the year centered on making the vehicle safe and legal for city driving by any member of the Caltech community. The CEVC also worked to inform the Caltech community about alternative transportation through booths and organizational efforts tied to the CETF Earth Day Fair, booths at the graduate and undergraduate student fairs, and co-sponsorship of "EV-1 Day" at Caltech, where many students got a chance to drive GM's svelt new electric vehicle.
