As a campus organization, CETF has addressed the institute's environmental
impact and responsibility in a number of ways. We realize that our
efforts are often rewarded with good outcomes. However, unless there is
an institutional memory that exists with regard to these efforts, they
will only treat the symptoms, not the source.
Recently, we've met with Caltech administration, hoping that they
will follow the example of many American and international universities,
who have drafted and adopted environmental policy statements or
statements committing to a certain level of environmental
responsibility. Some examples of campus policies can be seen at the Sustainable Campus Policy Bank
Our actions have included:
- Drafting an example of a policy for
Caltech.
- Having meetings with a variety of people
in Caltech's administration, facilities management, and faculty; and
generating support within the Caltech
community.
- Hosting Dr. Robert Gottlieb from Occidental College who gave
a presentation about environmental literacy in the university setting,
on April 5th 1999 to a Caltech audience.
