Social Consciousness Pledge for Commencement Registration

Thank you for signing up for the Social Consciousness Pledge for the 2003 Caltech Commencement.  We are very excited to offer this as the inaugural year for the pledge.  We hope that for this year and years to come, this symbolic pledge will have a very real impact in terms of encouraging graduates to make responsible decisions in the future. The pledge is entirely voluntary and is meant as a private affirmation of one's adherence to being a positive influence on society. We do not intend to post a list of signees.

In the several days in and around graduation, we will have a booth where we will encourage people to sign the pledge and hand out elegant pledge certificates.

Below is the text of the pledge:

As a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, I pledge from this day forward to take into account the social and environmental consequences of my actions and to refuse to participate in activities that willfully or recklessly impart harm to others or to the environment.  Moreover, I will consider the health and well-being of people throughout the world while striving to achieve my project and career goals.  I recognize that science and engineering should be used to improve the human condition worldwide and will devote the knowledge and skills learned here at Caltech to this purpose.
