The diamond-formation has four positions; defender, left and right wings (midfielders), and centre forward. The diamond-formation is not as compact as the box-formation, so watch for attackers trying to sneak into the area around the penalty point. The task of the defender is simple; defend the goal. The midfielders should prevent an attack down the middle, and should tag attackers behind the goal, in the corners, and at the long sides of the court. The centre forward typically has a more free role in the defense. (A coach/captain who prefers a more rigid defense formation, but still likes the diamond-formation during attacks, might want to choose a box-formation defense instead.) The centre forward is an obvious choice for forechecking (i.e. defending along the entire court).
