The box-formation has four positions, right and left defender, and right and left forward. It is more compact than a diamond formation, and therefore more difficult to penetrate. However, attackers who prefer shots from a distance can come a little closer to the goal before they shoot. The defenders can move in front of the goal, behind it, and to the corners and long sides of the court, as shown on the picture. If one defender moves to a corner or a long side, it's usually best to position the other defender by the goal. The forwards should prevent attacks straight down the middle, and they can also move to the long sides of the court, and if needed even if front of the goal. If desired, they can forecheck the other team (i.e. start the defensive work deep into the opponent's territory, even beyond the opponents goal line). It can be wise to not let more than one forward forecheck at the same time, though, or the defenders will risk a 2 on 2 attack.
