PHYSICS--IT'S WHAT WORTH LIVING FOR
Overview of Physics
Physics is the subject that makes going to med school seems like a vacation. You don't have to solve a lot of problems, but you probably need a lot of time just to solve some frosh hw problems (6 hrs to solve 4 problems is not uncommon at Caltech). The
main sub-topics in physics are: Electricty and Magnetism, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, High Energy Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Optics, Thermodynamics, Hydrodynamics, Relativity, Superconductivity, and theorectical physics, i.e., you h
ave to know everything. Although many think that a physics degree will severely limit one's career choices, it is actuallly the contrary. A physics degree will virtually gets you into any science graduate program because of its applications in all scienc
es.
Physics at Caltech
The undergraduate program in physics at Caltech is probably the most vigrous one in the nation. Besides the core institution requirements which include 2 years of math, 2 years of physics, 1 year of chem, and 1 year o
f basic labs, the physics department also requires two more years of advanced lab/ 1year adv lab and 1 year of thesis either in experiment or theory, 1 year of advanced classical physics, 1 year of
advanced quantum physics, and 2-year equivalent of electives in advanced physics.
Coming soon: Tribute to Feynman
One of the greatest and smartest physicsists ever lived, Richard Phillips Feynman is the best physicist in my opinion. The constructing page will be dedicated to stories of Feynman. Mean
while, you can look at photos of Feynman at the Caltech archive.

- John Preskill is a theorectical physicist at Tech. In fact, I picked him as my first choice for advisor but somehow I didn't get him. I suspect that nobody picked him except me.
- Caltech Local Resources

- Caltech Members of the MSC
- So do you want to see how physicists at Caltech look like? This page has a group picture of all faculty, graduate and former students, and visitors.
- Physics of Computation
- Those who are interested in computer engineering would find this page quite infomative. Carver Mead's group is working on computation and neural systems programs.
- David Goodstein's Home Page
- Goodstein is the prof for first term frosh physics. He was a close friend of Feynman. So far, he is my most favorite prof at Tech. BTW, for those who have seen "Mechanical Universe," the TV series for physics, he is the creator of that program.
- References to Caltech in Real Genius
"Real Genius" was a 1985 film that was based in Caltech. The film takes place at "Pacific Tech," a disguised version of Caltech. So you want to see how life at Caltech is, then check out this page.
