Joel Fafard is that rare breed of instrumentalist: the kind whose appeal
reaches far beyond the realm of serious guitar enthusiasts. The gifted slide
fingerstyle player writes stirring, melodic compositions that paint pictures
as vivid as any song with words. He introduces them on-stage with hilarious
commentary delivered in a "hillbilly farm-boy" stage persona that quickly
wins his audience over. And when he sinks his chops into a number like "Face
Down in the Rhubarb," well, let's just say the serious guitar enthusiasts
aren't disappointed either. This will be Joel's first appearance at
Caltech, so come see what his music is about!
Regular prices are $25, $20, $15 ($10 youth) but mention that you saw it
on our web page and all your tickets are just $10 each! Advance tickets are available at the Caltech Ticket Office.

Väsen is a Swedish word with many meanings: spirit, noise, a living
being, essence being among the most prominent. Their first recordeing
was released in 1990 and the group features Olav Johansson (nyckelharpa-
a traditional Swedish instrument related to the hurdy-gurdy and fiddle),
Mikael Marin (viola, fiddle) Roger Tallroth (12 string guitar) and
sometimes André Ferrari (percussion). Whether touring as a quartet or a
trio, Väsen combines a bit of Swedish traditional music with their own
compositions, and they have become one of the foremost proponents of
Swedish roots music. Come get initiated!
Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. The Folk Music Society is excited to have finally arranged an appearance
by this classic folk group> The Limeliters launched their career in 1959
at San Francisco's famous Hungry i and before long, founding members Alex
Hassilev, Lou Gottlieb and Glenn Yarbrough emerged as one of the dominant
voices of the early 1960's folk music scene. In the ensuing years, the
lineup has featured several spectacularly talented new members, but The
Limeliters have never deviated from the integrity of the fabulous sound that
they pioneered. Now, The Limeliters continue into the 21st century, with
members Mack Bailey and Andy Corwin, and newest member Gaylan Taylor taking
the place of original member Alex Hassilev. Their unique blend of thrilling
harmony, whacked out humor and contemporary satire consistently draws
standing ovations from audiences that today span three generations. With
their energy and enthusiasm undiminished, The Limeliters remain as exciting
an act as ever as the genre has produced. Now more than ever, the surging
vocals and wonderful sense of humor of this unique trio continue to earn
them their title as The Fabulous Limeliters!
Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for Caltech students and children. Mary delighted a large audience in her first Caltech appearance in 2005.
She came to the Folk Music Society's attention when we were contacted by her
son, who is a Caltech student. It turned out that she was an award winning
banjo player from Tallahassee, Florida, who had not really performed in the
West, though she was an established player in the Southeastern United
States. She's won banjo contests in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and
Alabama, and she plays mountain
dulcimer as well. She is steeped in old time string band music, as this
music has been in her family for three generations. She performs with her
husband, Bob on guitar, and she has five recordings to her credit, including
her newest one, Banjo Dreamin' : Swannee Nights."
The Caltech Folk Music Society is a non-profit organization with all
money collected going toward paying performers and for mailings and
other expenses. To confirm dates and times, contact Rex Mayreis or Nick Smith. Visit the
Caltech Public Events page at http://www.events.caltech.edu
and choose "Series" from the main page, and then Caltech Folk Music
Society Concerts. Their site also offers a listing of other programs on
the Caltech campus.
Ticket information is available from the Caltech Ticket Office.
Concerts are held in beautiful Dabney Hall and occasionally in Winnett
Student Center on a monthly basis. The CFMS is an informal group of
students and volunteers from the local community who arrange and
publicize these concerts. We publish a bi-monthly newsletter that
includes an in-depth calendar of folk music concerts, folk dancing, and
storytelling events throughout Southern California.
If you are interested in learning more about the Caltech Folk Music
Society or would like to receive the newsletter, drop a note to the
above mailing address, or contact Rex Mayreis.

About the Caltech Folk Music Society...
The Caltech Folk Music Society was started in 1983 by graduate students
Brian Toby and Simon Davies. The intent was to bring well-known
performers of acoustic music from around the country, and around the
world, to play at Caltech for a reasonable price. Long before playing
"unplugged" became fashionable, the CFMS began to seek out a wide range
of singer-songwriters, bluegrass bands, British Isles music, blues,
Nueva Cancion, guitarists, and a whole array of other musicians that did
not fit well into mainstream musical categories. While some of these
performers emphasize elements of "folk tradition," others are boldly
innovative and truly unique. Social activism, humor, and compassion are
commonly present as well.
