The Frequently
Asked Questions about Diana Gabaldon and The Outlander Series have
been taken from her answers to the questions from her online fans (America On
Line and CompuServe). In most cases, the answers are direct quotes from Diana's
posts. In others, she has edited the original answer to include more information.
Readers be cautioned
that some of the answers to these questions will contain Spoilers. If you
don't want to know anything about the future books, be cautious in your reading.
I will try to note which questions contain spoilers.
Where will the
story end? SPOILER
I think the Outlander
books will end in 1800. If this tells you anything, more power to you. {g} And
yes, the last book will have a happy ending, though I confidently expect it to
leave the readers in floods of tears, anyway.
Will there be
any movies based on the book?
I don't know about
the film rights. Meaning--we had sold an option--to the production company who
did The Stand, and who wanted to do a TV mini-series--but their option
has expired. They've expressed interest in renewing it, but we now also have a
couple of other interested parties, with various suggestions--feature film, BBC-sponsored
series, etc. So at the moment, nothing is settled, but stay tuned for further
Interesting Developments.
Do bear in mind,
though, that authors never have anything to say about who's cast in movies based
on their books.
What are the
plans for future books?
A prequel is under
contract, but not touched yet. There is no publication date set. It will detail
the story of Jamie's parents, Brian and Ellen Fraser. Diana has mentioned that
she will do the prequel in three short novellas.
In addition, Diana
is contracted for two contemporary mysteries. The first one is tentatively titled
White Knight. It may be completed this year and published sometime next
year. White Knight will feature Thomas Kolodzi and is set in Phoenix, Arizona.
The second mystery is not being written at this time.
Diana has indicated
several times that she would like to write the story of Master Raymond, Claire's
mentor and ancestor in Dragonfly in Amber. (For the story on how Master
Raymond is Claire's ancestor, see the FAQ About
the Characters.
